Heteromeles arbutifolia commonly known as toyon, is a common perennial shrub native to extreme southwest Oregon, California and Baja California. Funding for the improvements to San Gabriel Park was part of the voter-approved 2008 Park Bond. It gives its name to the carp family: Cyprinidae.

It occurs in riparian zone habitats at an altitudes range of 100–2,400 metres (330–7,870 ft). It commonly reaches 50–65 ft tall, but may be smaller in Southern California where it is generally found in riparian areas. Weights vary from about 0.8 to 2.2 pounds (0.36 to 1.00 kg), and length (including tail) from 17 to 24 inches (43 to 61 cm). The trail is a popular bicycle route.
